Core Stability

Core stability training is essential to enhancing functional fitness, sports performance and general injury prevention. Functional fitness is essential to both daily living and general activities. The body's core muscles are the foundation for all of the body?s movement. The muscles of the torso stabilize the spine and provide a solid foundation for movement in the extremities.

These core muscles lie deep within the torso. They generally attach to the spine, pelvis and muscles that support the scapula. When these muscles contract, we stabilize the spine, pelvis and shoulders and create a solid base of support. We are then able to generate powerful movements of the extremities. Training the muscles of the core corrects postural imbalances that can lead to injuries.

About the Classes

The classes are aimed at core strengthening and using many muscles in a coordinated movement. Rather than isolating a specific joint as in most weight lifting type exercises, core control focuses on working the deep muscles of the entire torso, as well as the stabilizing muscles in the hip, knees and shoulder region.

Core Control - Circuits

This class is aimed at a wide range of abilities from beginners to elite athletes. It involves the use of Swiss balls, wobble boards and soft mats laid out as separate stations each offering a different core exercise. There are up to 20 different stations for each class and whilst spending a length of time on each your technique will be readily checked and corrected so that you?re doing each exercise correctly. There are also progression levels for each station so the participant always works to their own abilities at whatever standard they may be.

Core Control

This class again is aimed at a wide range of abilities but it is taught in a more follow from the front style i.e. similar to Pilates, yoga, aerobics etc. with the class following the instructor?s moves. Participants may prefer this class if they?re used to a more structured based follow the instructor type routine.

Benefits for Sport

Both classes develop good core stability which helps maximize running, cycling, swimming, rowing, riding, etc. performance and prevent injury. Power is derived from the trunk region of the body and a properly conditioned core helps to control that power, allowing for smoother, more efficient and better coordinated movement in the limbs. Moreover, well-conditioned core muscles help to reduce the risk of injury resulting from bad posture. The ability to maintain good posture while taking part in sport or other various activities helps to protect the spine and skeletal structure from extreme ranges of movement and from the excessive or abnormal forces acting on the body.
